This group meets once per month at the Backwoods in Norman. We hike trails within a 90 minute drive of Norman. Only costs involved are park fees, if applicable.
The only group that I know of here in Tulsa is Green Country Outdoor Club. If you are a member of yahoo groups, they are GCOC-Tulsa@yahoogroups.com. They meet 2nd Thursday of the month, 7PM at Hardesty Library behind Jackie Cooper imports. Generally a good, safe, active group, so I've heard. Glenn or Robert from the Tulsa backwoods store can help getting you in touch with them. They both know me very well. If you are looking for a trip. I'm heading for Wheeler Pk. in NM for late July. Meeting a bunch of old scouting buddies/wives from my youth from Midland. I usually take my Goldwing on these short weekenders. You are welcome to join us for the drive alongside.
Summer time in Oklahoma backcountry can sometimes be no fun with the bugs, snakes, and poison ivy. That is why I do my hiking around here mainly in winter. If I do go camping during the summer, I stick with the established OK campgrounds.
I have 2, maybe 3 trips to the rockies planned this summer. Wheeler PK, NM end of July. Silverton/Ouray, CO end of Aug. and maybe a 14er around then too. You might consider heading to New Mexico for a 3/4 day weekend trip. A lot cooler. It's only about 8 hrs from Tulsa. Like Cimarron, or Red River, or Chama area. Great Trails.
Sorry Terri, that's Butterfield hiking trail. It's long (15 miles) but well maintained and well marked. My daughter & I did it as an overnight backpacking trip to test out some gear. But going light could have made it in a long day.
Hi Terri, the Tulsa store was doing nothing and the Norman store was pretty active last year. So I've been following them. For hiking around here, you pretty much have to drive 2 or more hours to get to any good trails. One of the better trails I can think of is Buttermilk Hiking trail at Devils Den State Park in Arkansas. It's a two hr. drive. I also like to hit the Ouchita National Trail down in the Kiamichi Wilderness Area. But summer is not a good time for that area (ticks, poison ivy). So I usually head for New Mexico & Colo. for summer hikes to beat the heat.
